Who gets to build the world’s fastest computer?

This is not going to be an ordinary PC, what we are talking about here is the world fastest supercomputer at the National Centre for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign.

The computer originally costed at around $200 million, but may cost over its five year life time another $400 million to run, will be built by IBM, and who else would you have thought, Dell would have done a good job!

This computer is going to be very similar to the one that is being built for the Pentagons, Defence Advanced research Projects Agency.

What is so great about the new supercomputer is that very fact that it will be the first computer to be capable of one thousand trillion mathematical operations per second. This has long been the benchmark standard in computing circles, it is also known as “PetaFlop”.

Once completed the computer will be a great demand and the costs will easily be recouped over the five year period and beyond.
