BMW’s could be running open-source

BMW have always been a thinking ahead company when it comes to innovations, and now they are looking to develop open-source software to be used as a platform for infotainment services. The idea is develop simple plug in and play applications.

The company has called on the other major car makers to join a panel where the development can be discussed in full and therefore a unified system could be developed for later use. They are talking of introducing this within five to seven years time.

The was made up by representatives from BMW, Chrysler, Ford Motor, General Motors and Honda R&D, but it turns out that not all were in agreement or as fully committed as BMW are about this project. Although many of the car makers agree that open-source would be the way to go.
